| Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are thin, lightweight,
and consume little power. These features are put to good use
in manufacturing the flat-panel displays that are essential
in the IT era. LCD applications are expanding to encompass
LCD monitors, notebook PCs, LCD TVs, cell-phones, and PDAs.
Under such conditions, the following characteristics are
demanded of LCDs:
(1) Greatly improved brightness (reduced power consumption)
(2) Improved visual characteristics
(3) Rapid response (for video)
(4) Enhanced color, higher precision, etc.
LCD optical films play a major role in achieving such improved
characteristics.
